3D Rendering vs 3D Modeling

3D modeling is the first step for a digital art, animation and design. 3D visualization and 3D rendering are separate stages in the overall process. Although they can be related to the following two image operation steps, their goals in the running pipeline of production are different.

What is 3D Modeling?

3D modeling is the process of creating a 3-dimensional representation of any object or scene, using specialized software such as Blender and Maya (there are many more softwares like 3ds max). This means forming the geometry of an object by using vertices, edges and polygons to shape out the framework.

Common Program Tools: 3D modeling programs as types of art tools, polygon modeling, sculpting, and parametric design are some common tools used.

3D Modeling outputs a digital mesh that is used to generate the shape of an object, the result can be textured & animated.

What is 3D Rendering?

Remediation: Translation of a 2D figurine (image) or animation to a 3D illustrative perspective This includes light simulation, shadow rendering, texture application, and reflective properties, among others to produce a genuine or artistic outcome.

Render Engines — Finally, rendering is done using engines such as Cycles, Arnold or V-Ray.

Rendering is the creation of a complete image or video from a 2D or 3D model. This image will be used in media production, animated movies, architecture live demonstration etc to express the final footprint of what was shown before creating.

How 3D Modeling and 3D Rendering are different?

Purpose: 3D Modeling is about building the structure and shapes of objects.

Rendering is visual, or can be referred to as shading with lights and pretty materials.

Tools

Modeling: Meshes and Sculpts

Rendering: Lighting, Shading and Texture tools.

While one covers the structure, the other is aimed towards a means of final polish (Avadhesh Gupta Designs), both are integral components of the complete 3D production pipeline.
