Blender Render Darker Than Viewport

Blender rendering darker compared to the Viewport is not unusual, especially with different render engines or post-processing effects. Tips to troubleshooting and making your renders match viewport brightness below.

Reasons for Darker Renders

Lighting Differences: Blender typically uses simplified lighting for quicker previews in the Viewport, which may not be representative of the final Cycles or Eevee lights. Make sure your scene has proper lighting by checking the Light Paths settings.

Exposure and Gamma Settings: First, verify your Exposure and Gamma settings in Color Management under Render Properties. We find that if these are not set correctly your render will come up as darker. Increase the exposure value to brighten the image, or adjust the gamma curve to modify midtones.

Difference between Viewport Shading and Render Shading: In the viewport change to Rendered View (Shift + Z) to see a preview in of what the scene will look like with the real-world render engine (Cyces or Eevee) and compare brightness.

Denoising and Post-processing: Make sure all Denoising or Post-Processing options on the Render Properties also match what you’re seeing in the Viewport. Post-processing effect(s) can make render look darker than I expect.
