Texture painting not working as it should in Blender can be caused by various different issues that may prevent you from painting on your model. Wheter there is an UV mapping problem or issue with your texture setup, there are a few steps that you can make to find and solve the cause.
Texture painting issues in Blender — Common errors
Incorrect UV Unwrapping: Your model needs to be UV unwrapped for Texture painting to work correctly. Go to the UV Editing workspace and unwrap your model so you get a texture map.
No Image Texture Selected: In the Texture Paint mode → select an image texture. A texture is needed to paint. To put it simply, Blender will not know where to paint in your strokes without an active texture. Make sure the model has an assigned material in which the Base Color node is linked to the texture you want to paint on.
Brush Settings: If the brush will not paint, look first at the Strength and Radius. If strength is low or radius small, it may look as if you are not painting anything.
Viewport Issues: Now you can see the texture changes if we switch to Material Preview or Rendered viewport mode. With Solid and Wireframe view modes texture painting will, of course, not be visible.
Fixing Texture Painting Problems
Make New Image Texture: If the texture has gone missing or is corrupt create a new image texture in the Shader Editor and attach it to the material. Now change to Texture Paint mode and carry on painting.
Apply UVs: UV map not accepting paint? Check the UV map to make sure it is applied correctly.
