Blender is a fine tool for building 3D characters, which you can use in games, animations or making visual effects. This article is here to guide you through the basic steps of creating a Blender character.
Concept Art: Prior to modeling, you should find or make a reference image (or concept art) of what the character will look like. This picture provides you with a visual guideline during modeling.
Model the Base Mesh: Using Blender’s modeling tools, start creating the base mesh. At first, it is made of simple shapes such as cubes and spheres; gradually add more geometry to refine the model.
Use the Mirror Modifier to make symmetrical models efficently.
Sculpting: Switch to Blender’s Sculpting Mode in order to add finer details to your character, such as muscle definition, facial features and folds in the clothes.
Blenders has different brushes that work like a clay sculpting tool, allowing you to shape the model from within.
Texturing: After modeling, UV-edit the character in order to make a flat texture map. Apply textures using your blender’s Texture Paint or an external program like Substance Painter.
Use PBR textures for realistic skin, clothing, and hair.
Rigging and Animation: Run through the basics of Skeleton Building in Blender’s Rigging Tools. Rigging tells you how to move and animate the character.
Add Inverse Kinematics (IK) for realistic limb movement and facial rigging for expression.
Rendering the Character: Set your lighting appropriately for the scene, and cast your character back using Cycles or Eevee for final output.
Character Creation Tips
Anatomy: Pay attention to your character’s anatomy and proportions in order to make them more believable.
Detailing: Do not neglect the little features like wrinkles, pores, and accessories. This adds true depth and realism to your character.
