Pixar Animation Studios is best known for its ability to craft unforgettable and incredibly vocal characters. These characters go through many stages of design, animation, and rendering.
Character Development in Pixar Process
Concept Art and Design: At Pixar, Characters are conceptualized in sketch/concept art. The artists work hand in hand with the directors to ensure that the design of characters reflects where they need to go emotionally in the story.
Modeling: After the design is established, 3D modelers sculpt up an electronic version of that character in any number of different programs, generally Maya or ZBrush. The the model is filled with details from face expressions to wearing clothes.
Rigging and Animation: Rigging is a process of attaching a skeleton to the model so animators can manipulate and pose the character. To bring characters to life, Pixar’s animators rely on a mixture of keyframe animation (which is how it has always been done) and procedural tools.
Texturing and Shading: Textures and shaders are added that make the character model realistic skin, hair, and clothing. To get that exact look, Pixar employs custom shaders depending on whether the character is photo realistic or stylized.
Final Rendering: Finally, they render the character in the scene in RenderMan, the proprietary render engine Pixar uses to generate the images.
