Cel shading is the rendering technique used to make 3D models have more of a cartoon feel, this means that Cel Shaded models are stylized versions of real life object. In animation or digital art video games, this is often used to look more squished and like a 2-D drawing /comic book.
Cel Shading Techniques
Simple Flat Shading: Uses flat colors instead of gradients making the model looks sharp and two-dimensional. Usually artists only employ one or two tones to suggest light and shade.
Line Art Integration: The 2D effect is further exaggerated by line art that goes around a model’s edges. This draws an outline around the 3D object, which once again lends to that cartoonish look.
Shading for Animation: One of the most popular uses for cel shading is in anime and CG animated movies, where it can create bold characters with distinct light-dark separations. I really feel it comes to life the most with cartoony expressions and fight or flight poses.
