In visual effects land, volume relates to a simulation of nature such as clouds and smoke & fog amongst other gas-like things. Volumes are especially important in giving scenes a sense of realism because allow objects to have 3D shape that can interact with lighting and other environmental elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of Volumes in VFX<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smoke and Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smoke and fire can interact properly with light sources and cast shadows to achieve a more realistic look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clouds and Fog<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volume based clouds and fog are necessary in VFX for environment settings, outdoor scenes (through fog, haze.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liquids and Gases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volumetric simulations are also used to show liquids in a way which behaves like gas, for example mist of vapor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importance of Volume in VFX<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volumes have become a more flexible way to add realism and transport storytelling in the environments. They help filmmakers and 3D artists simulate natural phenomena that otherwise may be impossible to reproduce practically. These volumetric elements mix with light in VFX, leaving behind accurate shadows, depth and a feeling to really being part of the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
